The Number That Does Not Add Up

A public museum on an ordinary Tuesday, and one chart Agastya could not walk past.

For almost all of human history the line barely moves. Then it climbs like a wall.

1A number on a museum wall
The chart said that for thousands of years people lived, on average, about thirty years.
The chart said that for thousands of years people lived, on average, about thirty years.
Thirty? Everybody was finished at thirty?
?!
AGASTYA'S FIRST GUESS

People must have simply aged faster. Hard work, hard weather, tired bodies. A person of thirty back then was old. That is what a short life means.

In the next case, a photograph taken when the line was still low.

WORTH REMEMBERING

An average is a summary. A summary can be perfectly true and still describe nobody in the room.

Charlie had found the bench by the window, as Charlie usually did.

So the chart is wrong.
The chart is fine. What is an average made of?

PAUSE & THINK

Ten people are standing in a room. Nine of them are ten years old. One is a hundred. The average age in the room is nineteen. How many nineteen-year-olds are there?

WORTH REMEMBERING

The average was not a typical life. It was two completely different lives, added together and divided by two.

4Two heaps, not one

PAUSE & THINK

A churchyard shows you the graves that were paid for. What kind of person is most likely to be missing from it — and does that make the picture better than the truth, or worse?

PAUSE & THINK

Ten children are born in eighteen hundred. Four die at about two years old. The other six live, on average, to about forty-nine.
Work out the average age at death before you turn the page.

Four beads pushed aside, six left. Four times two, plus six times forty-nine, over ten.

WORTH REMEMBERING

Around eighteen hundred, roughly four children in ten did not reach their fifth birthday. Today it is fewer than four in a hundred. That single change did more to the average than any medicine in this book.

So the small stones were not an accident of one parish. They were the ordinary case.

Fine, but they'd have known if it was dirty.
AGASTYA'S SECOND GUESS

Bad water looks bad. It is cloudy, or it smells, or there is something floating in it. People are not stupid. They would simply not have drunk it.

WORTH REMEMBERING

Water that carries disease can be clear, cold and pleasant to drink. That single fact cost the nineteenth century more lives than any war it fought.

You can't tell. You genuinely cannot tell.
So what could a careful person have done?
Nothing. That was the honest answer, and he hated it enough to remember it.

PAUSE & THINK

You live in that yard in eighteen forty. You are careful, clever and you love your family. Which bucket do you take, and how would you ever find out you were wrong?

9A theory that was wrong
The idea was called miasma: disease rises from filth as bad air, and bad air is what kills.

WHY IT WAS BELIEVED

Filthy places really did have more disease. Foul smells really did sit over the worst districts. The pattern was correct. Only the cause was wrong.

WORTH REMEMBERING

They had no microscope worth the name, no way to grow a sample, and no way to count a cause they could not see. With those tools, bad air was a reasonable answer.

PAUSE & THINK

A wrong explanation produced useful actions for fifty years. Would you keep the theory, because it works? What do you lose if you do, and what do you risk if you throw it out too early?

AGASTYA'S THIRD GUESS

WORTH REMEMBERING

England's first national tables, in the eighteen-forties, showed lives in the great manufacturing towns running many years shorter than in the farming counties. The difference was not the people. It was the buildings and the water.

21An invention arrives unevenly
Once a thing works, Agastya assumed, it spreads. That is not what the map showed.
Once a thing works, Agastya assumed, it spreads. That is not what the map showed.
But it's proven. Why would anyone wait?
THE UNCOMFORTABLE PART

The engineering was settled decades before the pipes reached the poorest courts. What was missing was not knowledge. It was money, law, and whose problem it was agreed to be.

So somebody just had to decide to pay.
And keep paying, long after it stops being news.

That's an enormous risk for a council to take.
It is. And then what, if they don't?
WORTH REMEMBERING

A sewer helps everyone in the district, including the people who did not pay for it. That is exactly why a company will rarely build one alone, and why the answer, almost everywhere, turned out to need an institution.

The same inventions reached other countries a century later, and are still arriving.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

One budget, one district, one year. A) a water main to two hundred houses. B) a clinic treating whoever arrives ill. C) train twenty midwives.
There is no obvious answer. Say which, and say what you are giving up.

It's the same inventions. Just later.
Which makes the interesting question when, not what.
AGASTYA'S NOTEBOOK

Discovering it and getting it to everybody are two completely different problems, and the second one is the slow one.
It needs money, law, a workforce and somebody who is still there in forty years.

An invention is not finished when it works. It is finished when it is boring.

CHAPTER TWELVE

The Answer, and the Next Question

He came back to the chart at the end of the day, which is when charts are honest.

The gallery had almost emptied. The line was exactly where he had left it.

AGASTYA'S NOTEBOOK

The thirty was true.
It was made of an enormous number of children who never grew up, and adults cut short by infections nobody could see.
The number was never about anybody.

There isn't one invention. There's a list.
Then say the list in one sentence.
Clean water, waste taken away, food all year, clean hands, vaccination, a room with a window.

Not one of those is a cure. Most of them are not even medicine.

WORTH REMEMBERING

Life expectancy rose because thousands of separate problems were solved by thousands of people, most of whom never met. No single invention did it, and no single person did it.

Understanding it is what let everyone else fix it too.

NEXT: THE INVISIBLE ENEMY

Agastya had his answer: most of the dying was children's. But nobody in that century could say what killed them. The water looked clean. The air seemed fine. Something was there, and it was too small for any eye.
